PRICKLY PEAR CACTUS PADS – HIGHLY BENEFICIAL

On the fleshy stem of the cactus plant – the pads or cladodes – flowers bloom and fruit grows at different times of the year.
The pads also have great potential as a food: when young (30-60 days old) they can be consumed raw or boiled.
Thanks to their high water content, they are also used as cattle feed, especially in areas experiencing long periods of drought.
The consumption of pads brings great health benefits. For many years sap from prickly pear pads was used in Portugal to produce a mixture for the treatment of whooping cough.
